Proposed Food Truck Bylaw Changes

At the Courtenay City Council Meeting on Monday, May 16, 2016, Courtenay Council voted to pass first, second, and third reading of Business Licence Amendment Bylaw 2847, 2016” – a bylaw with proposed new food truck regulations in the City of Courtenay. The bylaw regulations were developed after careful review of the results of the Food Truck Survey, as well as consultation with City of Courtenay staff, the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association, and the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The bylaw would permit food trucks on private commercial property zoned for restaurant use, at least 30 metres away from an existing restaurant. A set number of food trucks would also be permitted in designated areas in the following City parks:

• Lewis Park
• Airpark Walkway
• Standard Park

What does this mean? What are the next steps?

Changes to municipal bylaws require a statutory approval process and public notification. The proposed bylaw amendment will be presented to Council for final reading and adoption at the next regular Council meeting on June 13, 2016. If approved, the new regulations would go into effect on the next business day – June 14, 2016.
