Have A Working Smoke Alarm? You May Get Free Pizza

September 25, 2017

To celebrate Fire Prevention Week from Sunday October 8 to Saturday October 14, 2017, Domino’s Pizza and the Courtenay Fire Department are again partnering to reward Courtenay residents who have working smoke alarms in their homes with free pizza.

On Saturday, October 14th, when Courtenay residents in single family homes, duplexes and townhouses call Domino’s Pizza (581 Ryan Road) at 250-334-3333 between 5p.m. and 9 p.m., they may find their pizza is delivered with the help of Courtenay’s fire fighters.

With the customer’s permission, fire fighters will arrive by fire truck and inspect household smoke alarms to make sure they are working. Those with functioning smoke alarms will get their pizza for free. Households chosen will be at random and as resources are available.

If a home smoke alarm requires new batteries, the fire fighters will provide and replace the batteries. The Courtenay Fire Department may also arrange for a return visit to install a battery powered smoke alarm for residents who require and qualify for free installation.

This is the second year the Courtenay Fire Department has partnered with Domino’s Pizza to reward customers with the potential for a free pizza during Fire Prevention Week. Several fire departments in the greater Victoria area have been doing the program for the last several years.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways Out” and focuses on educating you, your family, and the community about the importance of having 2 ways out of your home in the event of an emergency. This important reminder along with the ongoing education of the importance of having a working smoke alarm can and will save lives.

Contrary to popular belief, the smell of smoke may not wake you. Serving as your nose when you are asleep, working smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death of loved ones in the event of a fire. Working smoke alarms give you and your family time to get out.

Important fire safety tips to remember are:

  • Know 2 ways out of your house and when a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
  • Install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home.
  • Test your smoke alarm monthly. Replace the batteries annually.
  • Replacing your smoke alarm every 10 years is recommended.
