Traffic Impacts from Water Main Replacement on Comox Road

The City of Courtenay is starting a major water main replacement project on Comox Road next week. The project will result in traffic delays during construction. The City is advising commuters to give themselves extra time for their trips on this route, and consider taking alternate routes if possible.

Construction could start as early as Monday, March 27 and is expected to continue until the end of May. The hours of work will be from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. Crews will be working in phases along the work zone between the 17^th Street Bridge and the K’omoks First Nation boundary, approximately 100 metres east of the Gas ‘n’ Go.

Commuters should expect alternating single-lane traffic during construction.  

Wacor Holdings Ltd. has been awarded the contract for the project.

The project is happening in advance of a separate Comox Road repaving project by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI).

“MoTI has informed us they will be repaving Comox Road later this spring or in early summer,” advised Craig Perry, the City’s manager of transportation and infrastructure – engineering. “We wanted to use that opportunity to replace the water main on this route, which has reached the end of its serviceable life. Coordinating our infrastructure projects is more efficient, and ensures we aren’t damaging the road surface unnecessarily later on.”

Properties along the construction route will experience brief disruptions to water service. Affected properties will be notified directly in advance by the project contractor. Traffic control personnel will be on site to help direct traffic, including vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Emergency vehicles and transit buses will be given priority.
