Rail With Trail

The City of Courtenay, in partnership with the Island Corridor Foundation and the Courtenay Rotary Club, is building a new cycle and pedestrian route between 5th Street and Cumberland Road, next to the railway tracks along the E & N corridor. The "Rail With Trail" will be built between April and September 2011.

The Courtenay Rotary Club has made the Rail With Trail their major fundraising initiative for 2011. Courtenay Rotary raised over $70,000 at their 2011 Rotary Auction, with the bulk of these funds going to the Rail With Trail project.

Plans for the Rail With Trail project include a hard surface trail on the east side of the railroad tracks (the same side as the train station). Invasive species such as Scotch broom and Himalayan blackberries will be removed. In their place, hundreds of new trees and shrubs will be planted to create a welcoming environment for train travelers and trail users.

The Rail With Trail concept is not unique to Courtenay. One of the goals of the Island Corridor Foundation is to expand multi-purpose use within the E & N Corridor. The foundation is actively involved with other local governments bordering the corridor to develop similar projects.
