The Courtenay Civic Cemetery is located  on the north side of Courtenay, at 4768 Old Island Highway, between Muir Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway.

 Visiting Hours

The cemetery is open to the public seven days a week from 8:00 am until dusk

To locate a grave site, please contact the Administration Department at City Hall between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday - Telephone (250) 334-4441 or email info@courtenay.ca

Note: All dogs must be kept on a leash.

Floral Offerings

Following any interment, floral arrangements and wreaths will be permitted to remain for one week

Fresh cut flowers may be placed throughout the year and only in City issued in-ground vases. 

One potted plant not exceeding 6" diameter is permitted for one week at Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas

Artificial flowers or plastic wreaths are allowed between November 1 -  March 31.  They will be removed after March 31 and placed in the general pick up area.

For the safety of the public, grounds maintenance crews, as well as the appearance of the cemetery the following items are not permitted in the cemetery:  Personal mementos, photos, decorative vases, candles, landscape rock, borders, fencing, plant hooks, solar lights, plants and plantings.  Unauthorized items placed at gravesites will be removed without notice,  and placed in the general pick up area.

The planting, removal, cutting down or destruction of any trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, bulbs or rocks is not permitted other than an employee of the City authorized to do so.

Niches

-Fresh or articial flowers may be placed in the bud vase attached to the bronze memorial provided the arrangement does not obstruct adjoining niches;

-Flowers or items taped or glued to the fronts will be removed immediately;

-Hanging adornments/decorations is prohibited and will be removed immediately;

-Tributes are not permitted on the ground in and around the columbarium 

Upright Monuments

Granite upright memorials may be installed on a casket plot in designated areas of the cemetery.  Contact City Hall for more information.     

Other Information

Graves may be transferred to another person upon submission of a letter to the City Clerk’s office giving full particulars on the person to whom the transfer is to be made. The applicable transfer fee must be paid at the time of transfer.

Plots may be sold back to the City for the original price paid less the care fund portion at the time the licence was issued.

A Right of Interment form will be issued when full payment is received.

City Council reserves the right to refuse to sell the use of more than two grave spaces to any one individual.

A cremation certificate is required for all cremated remains interments.

The inurnment of cremated remains must be completed within 90 days of all fees being paid.

Scattering of cremated remains is permanent and non-recoverable and is permitted only in the desigated scattering garden.

The City will not accept responsibility for missing vases, flowers or wreaths.

Any person disturbing the quiet and good order of the cemetery may be evicted by City staff.

The maintenance, layout and flower vases must be in accordance with the Cemetery Management Bylaw.

All memorial markers are installed by City staff.
