Open air burning is banned in the City of Courtenay in accordance with The Corporation of the City of Courtenay Fire Protective Services Bylaw No. 2556, 2008. Burning Allowed:
January 1 to May 14
October 15 to December 31
Permits required:
April 1 to May 14
October 15 to October 31
Burning Ban: Open air fires are not permitted between May 15 and October 15. Incinerators fitted with a metal screen or grill with a mesh of less than 9.5mm (3/8") to restrict sparks or flying debris may be used during this time period provided the weather conditions are not such that a total ban is in effect.Requirements:
- Permit shall be on site at time of burn
- Hose and water to fire site
- One adult in supervision at all times
- 3'x3'x3' in total size
- Burning permitted during daylight hours only
- Prohibited materials listed on permit SHALL NOT BE BURNED.
- Address to be displayed at roadside.

Portable Outside Fireplaces
During the past year, the Courtenay Fire Department has been receiving more and more calls from the public regarding the use of portable outdoor fireplaces within the City of Courtenay. The use of this type of appliance for the burning of wood is prohibited and if used for this purpose, the user could be subject to a fine
