- Changes to the City's Yard Waste Program
THE CITY OF COURTENAY
NEWS RELEASE June 18, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COURTENAY –The City of Courtenay announces a change to the City’s very successful yard waste collection program.
Until recently the compost facility that the City contractor uses has accepted non-biodegradable plastic bags as containers for yard waste. Due to the volumes now processed, this has changed and all bags must be compostible or biodegradable so they can be put directly through the shredder.
Beginning the week of July 1st, 2008 the City’s Contractor will not pick up bags that will not be accepted at the compost site.
Compostible bags should be available at local retailers including:
Safeway Samsom Eco Clean Canadian Tire Walmart
Home Depot Slegg Lumber Zellers Superstore
Home Hardware
Currently these retailers are waiting on new stock arriving so please check with them on the availability of the acceptable bags.
You may also place yard waste curbside in 77 litre (or smaller) containers clearly marked Yard waste or in Kraft paper yard waste bags that are also available at the above retailers.
There is no limit to the amount of yard waste placed out on the normal garbage collection day. The materials can be put out in 100% biodegradable or kraft yard waste bags or lidded refuse containers no larger than 77 litres and clearly marked Yard waste/Green Waste and not weighing more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
The materials allowed in this program include leaves, grass clippings, branches, tree or hedge clippings, Christmas trees, flowers, plants and other yard waste organics (green). In addition, branches up to 3” in diameter can be placed out in bundles no longer than 90 cm (36 inches) in length, no wider than 60cm (24 inches) across and not over 20 kg (44 lbs) in weight.
Details of the program, preparation of materials and items that are not allowed can be obtained from City Hall, and on the City’s website at www.courtenay.ca.
