City Hires Environmental Planner
The City of Courtenay has hired an environmental planner. Nancy Hofer began work at her new position in late July. Her focus will be on low impact development, cycling and parks.
Hofer’s priorities include the City’s cycling plan and related strategies, helping develop better and safer cycling corridors in Courtenay in conjunction with neighbouring communities. Other projects will include the City’s Parks Master Plan; identifying possible parkland acquisition and improving connectivity between parks. Hofer will also study Courtenay’s development permit guidelines to determine how to better incorporate sustainable development practices and environmental goals.
Courtenay is in the process of modifying its Official Community Plan in accordance with the Province of B.C.’s Bill 27. This Bill requires all local governments in B.C. to institute greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in the community, as well as actions and policies for achieving them. There will be opportunities for the public to have input on this process in the coming weeks.
Hofer holds a Masters Degree in Planning and a Bachelors Degree in Natural Resource Conservation. Her previous professional experience includes leadership roles in sustainable neighbourhood development and wildlife conservation. She has worked with various planning sectors and at all levels of government.
Hofer joins Allan Gornall, the City’s climate action specialist, in developing Courtenay’s overall climate action targets. Gornall has been actively pursuing greenhouse gas emission reduction opportunities in the City’s municipal operations, including its facilities, purchasing policy and vehicle fleet. Courtenay has signed on to the Province of B.C.’s Climate Action Charter, pledging to become carbon neutral with respect to municipal operations by 2012.
