THE CITY OF COURTENAY NEARING COMPLETION OF ITS PLANNING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN REVIEW PROCESS
The City of Courtenay has been working on developing a number of policies and strategies to lower community-wide greenhouse gas emissions including identifying a reduction target. Including greenhouse gas reduction policies and targets in a community’s Official Community Plan is now required of all municipalities in B.C. under provincial law.
The review began in August of this year; the OCP Amendment Bylaw will be adopted by the end of this year.
The public consultation process and public hearing revealed overall a high level of support for the City to take action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Residents also asked for tools and tips to help understand their individual environmental impact and ways to minimize it.
The LiveSmart BC program provided by the Province, includes resources such as a Carbon Calculator and 52 Ways to Reduce Your Emissions. The Carbon Calculator tool allows residents to input information on their home energy consumption (from their electricity and natural gas bills for example), water heater temperature settings, dishwasher and laundry settings and frequency of use and travel habits. A carbon footprint, expressed in tonnage, is then calculated and is compared against the provincial average. Residents who want to learn how to reduce that tonnage, can visit the 52 Ways to Reduce Your Emissions site.
