FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FEDERAL BUDGET 2009
COURTENAY – Greg Phelps, Mayor of the City of Courtenay announces that the City is ready to proceed on several infrastructure projects to stimulate the local economy, if Federal Funds become available.
“We have many community infrastructure projects ready to go, and all we need is funding”, Phelps said. “Prime Minister Harper is “very worried about the Canadian economy”, and a great way to stimulate the economy is to invest in local government infrastructure.”
The City of Courtenay has important projects ready for construction including a new water main in the Lake Trail Road area, a new Sanitary Sewer Trunk Line in the Arden Road area, Storm Drainage Work in the Piercy Creek area, Road Work on Cliffe Avenue to improve vehicle safety and the restoration and upgrade of the Native Son’s Hall, which is an important community asset and a designated heritage building.
According to the Federal of Canadian Municipalities:
- New investments will stimulate the economy while delivering lasting economic and environmental benefits.
- Municipalities can create 100,000 jobs starting this spring, but they need new money.
- Quality infrastructure will help Canada attract new jobs and investments.
- The Federal Government needs a new infrastructure program designed to fix and upgrade existing infrastructure and get planned projects off the ground.
Mayor Phelps has met with local Member of Parliament John Duncan to outline the city’s priorities. “Mr. Duncan was very receptive to our projects and was also supportive of the need to streamline the application process”, Phelps said.
