Freedom of the City is awarded to Doris Weislein
This award acknowledges the hard working, unsung heroes that contribute to our community. 
At the City of Courtenay's annual Volunteer Appreciation Night on Thursday October 8, 2009, Doris Weislein was awarded the honour of Freedom of the City in recognition of her years of service to our community.
Doris Weislein has many accomplishments to her name, including:
Founded the non-profit Upper Island Women of Native Ancestry
Established the Coats for Kids program
Established Makola, a housing project for low-income famillies
Co-founded the Wachiay Friendship Centre
Founded the Comox Valley Aboriginal Head Start Preschool
Founded Friday's Child - a program for supporting families dealing with fetal alcohol syndrome
Founded Tuesday lunches for families in need in the Comox Valley
In addition, Doris Weislein has served on the July 1st Committee for many years, and has brought a wonderful array of traditional First Nations and cultural entertainment from our area and beyond to the annual July 1st event.
The City of Courtenay is pleased to award this honour to Doris Weislein.
The City also acknowledged the work of Shawn Wilson, the community services director for the Comox Valley Salvation Army, with a Certificate of Appreciation. Wilson is leaving the Valley to be closer to family on the mainland.
The City awarded medallions to all Freemen of the City at the Volunteer Appreciation night.
