The City of Courtenay held an Open House on Wednesday, September 15: "Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets and Initiatives."
Residents viewed display materials and were invited to speak with City planning staff and submit comments on proposed initiatives. The City’s environmental planner Nancy Hofer and climate action specialist Allan Gornall presented information on climate change science, provincial greenhouse gas reduction requirements and the proposed changes to Courtenay’s Official Community Plan.
The public is invited to participate in the proposed changes to the City's Official Community Plan by viewing the display material and completing the comment sheet. The deadline to submit comments is Friday, October 8, 2010.
The City has been researching best practices in low carbon community development and has come up with a number of initiatives pertaining to land use, transportation, buildings and green infrastructure such as parks and street trees. Open house attendees were particularly interested in discussing more cycling opportunities for commuters in the City and improving the energy and water efficiency in homes and other buildings. Residents also cited other environmental concerns such as the need for more restoration efforts in local streams.
Gornall’s presentation on climate change science, titled “Our Choice,” included the most current findings on global climate trends. Gornall was recently trained on presenting the material by former American vice-president Al Gore through his climate solutions organization. The presentation builds on the information featured in the award-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. The open house featured a condensed version of the “Our Choice” presentation, the first opportunity anywhere in Canada for the public to see the presentation. There will be a full-length version of the presentation on Tuesday, November 2 at 7 pm at the Sid Williams Theatre. More information
