Update on negotiations between the City of Courtenay and CUPE 556

The City of Courtenay advises that its unionized staff, represented by CUPE 556, have voted to strike.

The City has been in negotiations with CUPE 556 for several months, and through a mediator reached a tentative agreement on April 8, 2011. While City Council approved the mediated settlement, the Union advises that their membership rejected the settlement.

The mediated agreement provided for a number of improvements for employees, including benefit improvements and wage increases. The agreement reached was for a two year term with 2% wage increases in both January 2011 and January 2012.

“The City intends to retain its position in this region as a fair and competitive employer,” says Mayor Greg Phelps. “Given the economic challenges of our region, a reasonable increase to our employees is justified but any additional tax implications are unacceptable.”

The City has begun preparations in the event a strike occurs.
