Volunteers needed for Rail With Trail work party
Saturday, May 21, 10 am to 12 noon
On Saturday May 21 from 10 am to 12 noon, join Courtenay Rotary for a work party to remove broom and noxious weeds at the "Trail Along the Rail". Volunteers are invited to enjoy a hot dog barbeque afterwards.
Broombusters, a grassroots organization dedicated to removing invasive Scotch Broom from Vancouver Island and the BC mainland, will be on hand to help out. They’ll be providing tools and instruction to any members of the public that wish to participate. Wear a long-sleeved shirt as there are blackberry bushes in the area.
This work party is the first step in what will likely be a months-long process to build a three metre wide hard surface trail between 5th Street and Cumberland Road, running parallel to the tracks along the E & N Corridor.
To join the work party, meet the teams from Courtenay Rotary and Broombusters at the corner of Menzies Avenue and 8th Street. View location (Google Map). All equipment will be provided. Volunteers must sign a waiver form and cut at their own risk. The City of Courtenay will be collecting the broom after the work party.
The Broombusters website, www.broombusters.org, offers a number of tips on removing Scotch broom. Cutting broom while it is in bloom will result in the plant dying in the summer heat. Broom must be cut at ground level or below to kill the plant. Cutting during the rainy season will not work.
For more information on the work party or the Rail with Trail project, please call the City of Courtenay Community Services department at 250-334-4441.
