OLD ORCHARD AREA TRAFFIC CALMING PROGRAM

A Traffic Calming Program will be undertaken by the City of Courtenay in the Old Orchard area (see MAP) in order to make neighbourhood streets safe for everyone and to preserve and enhance the liveability of the neighbourhood. The Program will achieve these goals by pursuing objectives using traffic calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds, discourage through traffic and minimize conflict between all road users.

The community will be involved in identifying and quantifying the underlying issues through five community members who have been asked to sit on a Traffic Advisory Committee which has been meeting to:

  • identify transportation issues;
  • assist in determining the study area boundaries;
  • assist in locating volunteers for data collection;
  • assist in organizing, publicizing and facilitating events such as walkabouts, workshops and open houses;
  • review materials intended for presentation or distribution to the community
  • review preliminary traffic calming plans; and
  • provide input on draft reports.

The members of the Advisory Committee have identified the following priorities for the study area:

  • Identify the potential consequences of development in the study area.
  • Eliminate 'rat-running' through residential streets (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Duncan, England and Anderton)
  • Eliminate speeding especially on wide streets and long stretches on 3rd, Cliffe and Anderton.
  • Reduce traffic volumes on residential streets in the study area.
  • Increase safety at intersections with particular attention to 1st and Anderton, 1st and Cliffe, 5th and Anderton and 3rd and Duncan.
  • Incorporate more pedestrian-friendly features in the installation of curbs, sidewalks, walkways and a link to the River Way.
  • Determine the role of parking in the study area.
  • Reduce unnecessary truck and other large vehicle traffic in the study area.

Meetings of the Traffic Advisory Committee will be held every two weeks over a period of several months. All meetings are public and you are invited to attend.
