PUNTLEDGE PARK AREA TRAFFIC CALMING PROGRAM
Open House May 30th 2006
The City is currently undertaking a Traffic Calming Program in the Puntledge Park area (see MAP)
Upon the request of the Puntledge Park Residents Association and concerned motorists the City has formed a group to review and assess traffic concerns. The goal of the program is to ensure public safety on our roads and to preserve and enhance the liveability of local neighbourhoods. The program will utilize traffic calming methods as recommended by the Transportation Association of Canada.
The Traffic Calming Group is composed of City Planning and Engineering staff and local residents. Also available to the group will be members of the RCMP Traffic Division and local ICBC representatives.
The community will be involved in identifying and quantifying the underlying issues through four community members who have been asked to sit on a Traffic Advisory Committee which has been meeting to:
- identify transportation issues;
- assist in determining the study area boundaries;
- assist in locating volunteers for data collection;
- assist in organizing, publicizing and facilitating events such as walkabouts, workshops and open houses;
- review materials intended for presentation or distribution to the community;
- review preliminary traffic calming plans; and
- provide input on draft reports.
The members of the Advisory Committee have identified the following priorities for the study area:
- Excessive speeding on 1st and 4th streets.
- Traffic impacts of potential developments in the study area.
- The safety of intersections at Menzies and 1st St. and 5th St.
- Traffic volumes on 1st and 4th streets.
- The design of 1st street, i.e., width, sidewalks, signage, parking, etc.
- Lack of Police presence in the area.
- Illegal vehicles on 1st street.
- Inadequate sidewalks adjacent to schools.
Meetings of the Traffic Advisory Group will be held every two weeks over a period of several months. All meetings are public and you are invited to attend.
