Climate Action Survey 2010
The City of Courtenay recently requested feedback through a survey on the topic of climate change. 96% of respondents are either “extremely” or “definitely” concerned about climate change and would like to see the City do what it can to reduce greenhouse emissions and protect the environment .
Nearly 150 residents completed the survey to provide input on the City’s proposed initiatives, including alternative transportation options, energy efficiency, water use and landscaping guidelines. The survey was available at a September open house, as well as on the City’s website.
The study reveals a strong level of support for the initiatives proposed in the climate change amendments to the City’s Official Community Plan. All communities across the province are now required to include greenhouse gas reduction targets, policies and actions in their plans.
The dominant issue revealed by the survey was transportation. Half of the respondents rated automobile infrastructure as good or excellent. Alternatives to the car were rated much lower: 28% of respondents felt walking was good or excellent, while only 9% felt transit was good or excellent. Cycling was identified as most in need of improvement, with only 7% of respondents rating it good or excellent. Bus shelters and multi-use trails were also listed as needing improvement. Road improvements and road signage were rated as relatively low priorities to residents.
When asked about their priorities regarding environmental issues, residents displayed a strong support for a wide range of environmental issues. Respondents were generally in support of design initiatives for buildings, streets and other infrastructure that protect natural features and lower environmental impact.
The City will use this survey information to assist with setting targets in the Official Community Plan, as well as to come up with future initiatives to promote awareness and citizen engagement.
As part of the overall planning process, the “Our Choice” presentation originally scheduled for November 2 at the Sid Williams Theatre has been postponed until early 2011, with more details to be announced in the coming months.
