Cycling in the Comox Valley

The City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland and the Comox Valley Regional District have joined forces to promote cycling and improve cycling routes throughout the Comox Valley.

The goal is to encourage people to consider cycling as a viable transportation method, as well as to coordinate, prioritize and develop bikeways in all of the local government areas.

There is still much work to be done, but with no shortage of enthusiasm, momentum is building! The Comox Valley Cycling Task Force and the new Cycling Public Advisory Committee are hard at work to improve cycling in the Comox Valley.

Comox Valley Cycling Plan
In 2007, Landworks Consultants developed the Comox Valley Cycling Plan. This report is based on plenty of input from local cyclists of all ages and abilities. The goal of the Plan is to help make cycling a safer and more enjoyable experience throughout the Valley. Read the plan (PDF). Look at the map (PDF).

Comox Valley Cycling Task Force
The Cycling Task Force, established in 2007, is made up of members of all local governments working together to develop a comprehensive cycling strategy. Their goal is to improve cycling access in the Comox Valley, both recreationally and for commuting, and to improve safe travel for all members of the public and safe access to regional bikeways. The Task Force will focus on education, recreation, and transportation. Find out more.

Cycling Public Advisory Committee
The Cycling Public Advisory Committee was established in 2009 to act as an advisory body to the Comox Valley Cycling Task Force. They advocate for cycling issues in the Comox Valley, and make recommendations to the Cycling Task Force and specific jurisdictions on regional cycling issues. They communicate with the general public on cycling issues, concerns and suggestions. Find out more.

Bike to Work Comox Valley
The Comox Valley is home to the annual Bike to Work Week event. Find out more (external link).

This year the four local governments (Village of Cumberland, Town of Comox, City of Courtenay and the Comox Valley Regional District) were challenged by the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition to achieve the highest participation rate in Bike to Work Week amongst staff and politicians. The Cycling Coalition intends for this challenge to be an annual event in order to encourage friendly competition between local governments.

The 2011 winner was City of Courtenay. A plaque of this acknowledgement can be found at City Hall. Congratulations City of Courtenay participants!

2011 Gil Peñalosa visit

The Cycling Task Force has released a summary report including recommendations from the recent visit of livability and active transportation expert Gil Peñalosa. In mid June Mr. Peñalosa visited the Comox Valley to share with the community opportunities for making the Comox Valley a more people friendly place. Mr. Peñalosa and the 8-80 Cities consulting firm he directs, advises municipal, corporate and community leaders around the world on walking, cycling, public transport, and the promotion of public places. A series of events were organized including a public talk at Native Sons Hall and workshops with politicians, local government staff and organizations who are involved with active transportation and public places. Sponsorship for Gil’s visit was provided through the Comox Valley Cycling Task Force and the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition. Click here to see the report.
