The Financial Services Department includes the Finance, Purchasing, Financial Planning, Payroll and Business Performance Services divisions. It is responsible for managing the financial and purchasing systems, supporting the activities of other departments, and providing financial information to the public.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate is responsible for processing payroll, new hires, terminations, salary changes, reclassifications and benefit administration for union and exempt staff.

The Payroll Coordinator works collaboratively as a member of the Financial Services team, as well as working closely with the Human Resources group to provide administrative support to the management team.  This is done through planning, development, research and evaluation of activities and initiatives related to payroll, benefit administration and employee information.

 The Successful Candidate Will Have: 

Education, Occupational Certificates, Licenses, Association Memberships & Experience:

  • Post-secondary education such as a diploma and/or degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Human Resources
  • Membership in the Canadian Payroll Association
  • The Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification with the Canadian Payroll Association
  • The Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification with the Canadian Payroll Association is considered an asset
  • Considerable (5-7 years) experience in payroll practices in a unionized environment, local government and confidential payroll
  • A sound (3-4 years) experience in benefit administration
  • Some (1-2 years) experience in Accounting is considered an asset
  • Some (1-2 years) experience in Human Resources is considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and principles of preparing, calculating and processing all aspects of payroll including activities relating to hourly wages, salaries, leaves, benefit reconciliation, superannuation reporting, year-end reconciliation, as well as monthly and year-end government reporting.
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and Provincial government legislation and regulations, and union agreement(s) related to wage and benefit administration and Human Resources employment and labour relations best practices.
  • Good understanding of the financial and accounting implications of payroll transactions
  • Advance Excel and Word skills
  • Experience with Diamond Great Plains and Worktech / Pearl considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, time management, analytical, problem solving and attention to detail skills
  • Ability to deal with customers (both external and internal) in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Ability to apply discretion to sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
