City Installing Aqua Dam as a Precautionary Measure

January 26, 2018

Update, Saturday January 27, 10:15 am: Please note that the Aqua Dam on Comox Road will be deployed on Sunday, January 28 in the morning instead of Saturday, January 27.

Previously: BC Hydro has advised of concerns of potential high river levels starting Saturday, January 27 to Tuesday, January 30.

As a precautionary measure, the City is deploying the Aqua Dam (temporary water filled barriers) technology on Comox Road between Old Island Highway and Highway 19a bypass (near the Courtenay Slough). It is anticipated that the Aqua Dam will be in place for several days.

Other flood risk measures in place include a Tall Wall, installed permanently in 2016 on Old Island Highway between Ryan Road and Headquarters Road. As well, an Aqua Dam is currently in place that was installed in November, 2017 in Lewis Park behind the outdoor pool and walkway area.

See the map below for the locations of the Tall Wall and Aqua Dams.

Traffic Closures:
As the city installs and deploys the Aqua Dam the morning of Saturday, January 27 the south bound lane between Old Island Highway and Highway 19a bypass near the Courtenay Slough will be closed for approximately 4 hours.

The City will provide more details as they become available.
