Mayor and council

Council is the elected governing body for the City of Courtenay. It is made up of a Mayor and six councillors.

Under the Community Charter and the Local Government Act, Council has the statutory authority to:

  • provide services
  • set budgets
  • levy taxes
  • establish policies for the benefit and protection of Courtenay residents

Council meetings follow the rules in the Council Procedure Bylaw and Robert's Rules of Order.

Council members are also expected to follow the Council Code of Conduct Bylaw, which sets standards and expectations for their conduct.
