About the project

The City of Courtenay is starting work on Phase 1 of the Lake Trail Multi-Use Path. This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike or roll along Lake Trail Road between Arden Elementary and Lake Trail Community School.

Phase 1 includes:

  • Building a 620-metre gravel multi-use path on the north side of Lake Trail Road between Lake Trail Community School and Arden Road.
  • Improved bike lanes on the north side of Lake Trail Road between Arden Road and Webb Road.
  • An upgraded bus stop.
  • Drainage improvements next to the pedestrian path between Arden Road and Lake Trail Community School.

A proposed Phase 2, from Arden Road to Arden Elementary, is pending environmental permit approvals.

The project is designed to:

  • Increase connectivity between Lake Trail Community School and Arden Elementary. 
  • Improve safety for people who walk or bike along the corridor.
  • Encourage more families to choose walking or cycling for their commute. 
  • Contribute to a more active and sustainable city.

Traffic notices and updates

  • Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place along sections of Lake Trail Road beginning September 15. 
  • Construction will begin near Lake Trail School and move towards Arden Road.  
  • Work will be focused during weekday, workday hours.

Background

  • In 2018 and 2022, elementary students and neighbourhood advocates asked Council for safer walking and cycling options between the two schools. 
  • The project is supported by the City’s 2019 Parks and Recreation and Transportation Master Plans, which allowed the City to begin initial design work.
  • In 2021, Council approved a grant application to support the project. 
  • In 2024, the City received a $500,000 grant through the Province of B.C.'s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program.
