  • April 2026: The City of Courtenay invites tenders for C26-068 (Phase 2) of the Lake Trail Multi-Use Path and Arden Creek Improvements. The tender closes on April 28 at 2 p.m. with an optional pre-tender site meeting on April 15. View tender C26-068 bid details
  • March 2026: Council approved Phase 2 of the Lake Trail Multi-Use Path. Work will begin in summer 2026.

About the project

The Lake Trail Multi-Use Path project provides a safer, easier way for students, families and residents to travel between Arden Elementary and Lake Trail Community School.

Phase 2 – 2026

Phase 2 will extend active transportation improvements further west along Lake Trail Road and includes:

  • A gravel multi-use path from Arden Road to Webb Road.
  • Habitat restoration in Arden Creek.

Phase 1 – completed 2025

Phase 1 was completed by Sakaw Projects between September 15 and November 2025. It included:

  • A gravel multi-use path on the north side of Lake Trail Road between Lake Trail Community School and Arden Road.
  • Improved bike lanes on the north side of Lake Trail Road between Arden Road and Webb Road.
  • An upgraded bus stop.
  • Drainage improvements next to the pedestrian path between Arden Road and Lake Trail Community School.

Project benefits

The project is designed to:

  • Increase connectivity between Lake Trail Community School and Arden Elementary. 
  • Improve safety for people who walk along the corridor.
  • Encourage more families to choose active transportation for their commute. 
  • Contribute to a more active and sustainable city.

Project background

  • In 2018 and 2022, elementary students and neighbourhood advocates asked Council for safer walking and cycling options between the two schools. 
  • The project is supported by the City’s 2019 Parks and Recreation and Transportation Master Plans, which allowed the City to begin initial design work.
  • In 2021, Council approved a grant application to support the project. 
  • In 2024, the City received a $500,000 grant through the Province of B.C.'s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program.
  • The project also receives funds from the neighbouring Comox Valley Regional District Electoral Area C.
  • In April 2026, the City decided to focus on the gravel path and habitat restoration to manage costs and ensure the project is completed on time. Bike lanes will be painted when the City upgrades the road surface in 2027.
