The City of Courtenay invites applications for the position of Casual, On-Call Mechanic in the Operational Services Department.

The Operational Services Department is responsible for overseeing the ongoing operation and maintenance of all infrastructure assets within the City of Courtenay. The department is comprised of three divisions: Public Works Services, Utilities Services and Parks & Civic Facilities Services.

The Public Works Services Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the City’s in-service road and fleet assets, including streets decor, sidewalks, trails, signage, road markings, traffic signals and electrical systems, overland drainage, including ditches and associated storm water conveyance systems and related road works. In addition, it is also responsible for the City’s vehicle fleet management, maintenance and contributes to both short and long-term planning for the City’s infrastructure services and capital asset renewals.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanic provides input in the planning, organization and implementation of systematic preventive maintenance programs and plans and schedules repairs, tests, and inspections; inspects, services, repairs and maintains, to a journeyman level, vehicles, equipment, power tools and equipment, hand tools; identified and requisitions parts, supplies and materials; documents and maintains records on all maintenance and repairs; assists in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12
  • Journeyman Red Seal certification in heavy duty or commercial transport mechanics
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License with air endorsement (Class 3 Drivers License with Air Endorsement would be an asset)
  • BC Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate
  • First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification
  • Considerable (5 years) post-journeyman experience  in the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of light and heavy equipment, including welding
  • Extensive knowledge of proper methods and procedures for mechanical maintenance and repair including hydraulic and hydrostatic systems
  • Considerable knowledge of health and safety regulations and practices relating to a mechanical shop
  • Sound knowledge of vehicle computer diagnostic systems
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, and fleet repair manuals
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and schedule work
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
  • Ability to continuously use hand tools, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day; occasionally work in confined spaces and in inclement weather

  • Job related safety training

The current hourly wage rate is $40.71.  This is a casual, on-call position.  Hours of work could be between 7:30 am and 4 pm, Monday to Friday.  Casual employees receive 12.4% in lieu of vacation entitlement, statutory holidays and benefits.
