The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Human Resources, the Senior HR Specialist Labour and Employee Relations is a seasoned human resources generalist with significant strength and experience in employee/labour relations. This position provides leadership and guidance to departments on all HR processes and activities with a focus on labour and employee relations matters.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or Business Administration with a Human Resources focus plus 5-7 years recent related experience or an equivalent level of education, training and experience with complex labour relations experience;
  • CPHR preferred or Eligibility for CPHR;
  • Demonstrated experience as a human resources generalist in a unionized environment with sound experience in recruitment, progressive discipline and performance management;
  • Considerable experience in collective agreement interpretation and fact finding, discipline and grievance handling;
  • Experience providing advice in a unionized environment to supervisor/manager in the areas of labour/employee relations, performance management, employee development planning, attendance management;
  • Considerable experience organizing and preparing grievance file documentation, including for arbitration, and drafting reports and correspondence;
  • Sound experience in managing/administering human resources programs and special projects
  • Strong negotiation, facilitation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • Ability to present viewpoints and ideas effectively in both written and oral form;
  • Thorough knowledge of labour law, employment standards, human rights and other related legislation are required to ensure compliant policies and practices;
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge including MS Office and HRIS systems;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, with changing priorities, deadlines, and to readily adapt to change;
  • Ability to exercise exceptional judgment in dealing with confidential and sensitive information;
  • Considerable understanding of collective agreement interpretation;
  • Ability to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement.

COMPLEMENTARY ASSETS:

  • Experience in a municipal environment
