The City of Courtenay's water source supply comes from the Comox Valley Regional District.
The City of Courtenay operates and maintains a Class 3 water distribution system (EOCP Facility No. 460).
All water suppliers in British Columbia are required to monitor water that is distributed to consumers for total coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E.coli) regularly. The monitoring is one part of a comprehensive approach to safe drinking water.
The City of Courtenay samples its water distribution weekly at 7 different locations throughout the distribution system. Samples results can be viewed on the Island Health website.

Water Smart Action Plan
The Water Smart Action Plan provides a water conservation plan for the City of Courtenay that reflects the City’s commitment to reducing indoor and outdoor water use. The plan was presented to Council in 2019. The goal of the plan is to reduce non-agricultural per capita consumption by 50% by 2050 from 2008 levels to meet the Comox Valley Regional District’s (CVRD’s) Water Efficiency Plan targets. - Reviews the City’s water use consumption data including ADD, MDD, PHD, and monthly demand
- Uses population, irrigated area and other inputs to break down existing water usage in Courtenay and forecast future baseline demands
- Identifies a set of water conservation programs for Courtenay to reach CVRD reduction targets
