Mateo, skateboard instructor extraordinaire, has put together a video compiling basic skateboard tricks including the Ollie, Fakie Ollie, Nollie, Pop Shuvit, Backside 180, Frontside 180 and Kick Flip. Get a quick view of all of these tricks in one place to see how they compare side by side.

 

360 Flip with Mateo

Mateo is back with another more advanced skateboard trick. This week is the 360 Flip (also known as the Treflip). For this trick, you are going to spin/flip the board 360 degrees without turning your body. Before you try this trick, make sure you are comfortable with the Pop Shuvit and Kick Flip as it a mix between the two tricks.

Half Cab with Mateo

Mateo is back with another skateboard trick. This week is the half cab which is also known as a Fakie Ollie 180. For this this trick, you are going to Ollie and rotate your body with the board 180degrees, changing your direction of travel. Before you try this trick, make sure you are comfortable with the Fakie Ollie and Fakie Kick Turns.

Mateo, skateboard instructor, is back to teach you an Ollie variation this week – the Fakie Ollie! In skateboarding, and other board sports, a fakie is riding backwards with the tail of your board facing the direction of travel.


Making a Lava Lamp with Jeremy

Jeremy, summer camp leader, shows how to make a bubbly Lava Lamp with kids. This fun science experiment involves things you have at home like oil, water, an alka seltzer tablet and some colouring. Courtenay Rec instructor Grace shows how to do fun experiments at home to learn about density. Using basic materials Grace shows how changing the density of water causes objects to float or sink and using oil on water causes even more interesting results.

Courtenay Rec instructor Lataisha presents a fun word game you can do with your child. This cooperative game is simple and effective for thinking of letters and the sounds they make. It’s also progressive and can be played by many ages of children with adaptations. Have fun!

Donovan, our Active Living Programmer, continues his series of fundamental skills with catching. Get some tips on hand positions for a proper catch and enjoy a fun game of “Catch-it, Drop-it” with your child. Catching is an essential skill for sports like football, baseball and dodgeball. Children who develop fundamental movement skills like catching are more likely to participate in sports when they’re older.

Practice the fundamental skill of throwing with Donovan

Donovan, our Active Living Programmer, has made a video on how to practice the fundamental skill of throwing with your child! This easy to follow video includes a fun throwing game.

Throwing is an essential skill to sports like baseball, dodgeball, and football. Children who develop fundamental movement skills like throwing are more likely to participate in sports when they’re older. For example, a child who isn’t competent or confident in their throwing abilities is much less likely to join a slow-pitch game than a child who is.

For a basic overhand ball throw:

1. Hold the ball in one hand
2. Stand sideways to the target, with your non dominant side closest to the target
3. Use your non dominant hand to point at the target
4. Using your dominant hand, pull the ball back past your ear (like a bow and arrow!)
5. Step forward with your opposite foot and throw the ball just like you’re giving a high-five!
6. Allow your arm to swing through and extend completely
7. Follow through with your arm – in direction of the target
