The City of Courtenay invites applications for the position of Adapted Program Instructor in the Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department.
The Recreation Programming Division is responsible for the provision of programs and leisure opportunities for all age groups and abilities year-round. The Division promotes healthy lifestyles and works with individuals and community groups in the provision of recreation services.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Adapted Program Instructor leads, facilitates, and assists in planning of adapted and inclusive recreational programs in accordance for children, youth and adults with disabilities. They will create quality experiences for patrons. The Instructor will make recommendations on program adaptation, supplies and equipment. They will perform setup and take down as needed.
We are looking for a team member who can emphasize sports for our adapted services programs.
This is a non-union position. Hours of work will be part time, as required and may include evenings, days and weekends. Wages starting at $20.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications. An additional 4% of gross wages is paid in lieu of vacation and benefits.
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
- Diploma, certificate, or degree in related field – i.e. Therapeutic Recreation, Human Services, Community Support Worker, Special Education, etc. (or a combination of education and experience)
- First Aid Level 1 & CPR C
- Criminal Record Check
- Working with people with disabilities
- Facilitating recreational programming
- Program Planning
- Interpersonal, communication, organizational, time-management, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt activities to meet participant’s needs
- Highly motivated and ability to work as a team and independently
- Ability to build healthy relationships with participants and promote positive values and recreational benefits
- Ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, afternoon, evenings, weekday and weekends as required for operational requirements.
Complimentary Qualifications:
- Class 4 driver’s license
