The Opportunity
A temporary full-time exempt position exists for Community Services Coordinator to join the Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department.
The Community Services division is a new function with the City of Courtenay, established to support the City’s role in facilitating and furthering community and social sustainability through its policies, programs, and services. The City’s OCP identifies reconciliation, climate action, community well-being, and equity as cardinal directions and Community Services plays a key role in delivering on the OCP goals and Courtenay’s vision to support a high quality of life for all people.
The Community Services Coordinator is a new position that will guide the work of the Community Services division including the initiation and planning of a Community and Social Development Framework to help guide our approach, set future direction and priorities, and identify where the City can have the greatest impact in supporting the social fabric of the community. The position is responsible for the coordination of policy development and implementation of activities to address priorities associated with social equity, community health and well-being, and community building from an asset based community development lens.
The Community Services Coordinator will act as liaison between the City and community groups, support intergovernmental advocacy and partnership, and assist with coordinating responses to community and social issues including but not limited to health, mental health and substance use, social equity, access and inclusion, homelessness, poverty reduction, and well-being. The position will work closely with and act as liaison for existing and developing initiatives with other City departments, other levels of government, First Nations, community organizations, and residents, including those with lived and living experience of mental health, addictions, homelessness, poverty, and marginalization.
The Community Development Coordinator will work alongside community partners and residents to enable, support, and collaborate to increase the capacity of individuals, sectors and the community to bring about a healthier community for all. The role will help identify service gaps, emerging issues, and collaboratively create plans to respond.
The Community Development Coordinator will support the Director on high priority, strategic projects and initiatives of Council, providing support on complex issues focused on enhancing community and social well-being. This position will focus on creating a healthy and vibrant community by implementing various programs and initiatives that foster community engagement and enhance quality of life for residents.
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
- Degree in Social Work or social services field, social planning, recreation, public administration, public health, or related discipline from a recognized educational institution.
- Criminal Records Clearance – Vulnerable Sector
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
- Current First Aid Standard Level - Industry and CPR Level A & C or willingness to obtain upon hiring
- Training in Trauma Informed Care, Cultural Safety, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or related areas
- 3 – 5 years’ experience in community and social development, social policy, and or social planning
- Considerable experience with building and maintaining relationships with community organizations and partners
- Experience working with people with lived and living experience of mental health, substance use, and homelessness, as well as others who face barriers to equitable access and inclusion including Indigenous peoples and people of colour, 2SLGTBQIA+, and people with disabilities.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of Asset Based Community Development principles and practices, the social determinants of health, and collective impact.
- Considerable experience with project and program management and outcome evaluation; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with interested parties and partners. Ability to listen actively and interact effectively with diverse individuals, groups, and agencies.
- Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of orders of government, relevant community-based services, as well as service priorities and gaps.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing and developing policies, practices and programs that involve complex interrelationships between community development, social sustainability, and community interest
- Ability to work independently and with others; take initiative and demonstrate good judgement; and possess political and community acumen.
- Comfortable working with complex issues and in ambiguous situations. Excellent problem-solving skills and ethical decision-making skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, public speaking skills including conflict resolution skills. Ability to clearly community complex issues internally and externally.
- Experience with grants: sourcing, writing, and administration, as well as research and reporting.
- Experience in negotiating agreements, terms, and conditions with partnering agencies
- Strong office computer skills
COMPLEMENTARY ASSET:
- Knowledge of local community services, issues, and resources considered an asset.
This is a full-time limited term position. The employment term for this union exempt position is up to two (2) years.
