The City of Courtenay invites applications for two temporary full-time positions of "Labourer” in the Utilities Division of the Operations Department. This is a temporary full-time, union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
The Utilities Division is responsible for overseeing the ongoing operation, maintenance and construction of the Water Distribution system, Wastewater Collection and Storm Water Drainage systems, as well as Solid Waste Services.
The incumbent in this position will work as a member of a crew, requiring a cooperative team effort supporting the Solid Waste Services Division.
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
- Grade 12 or equivalency
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
- Some (1 year) related experience within the past five years in civil construction and/or public works related maintenance tasks or six months of previous experience
- Some knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in civil construction and or public works related municipal maintenance work.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Some knowledge of computers and the ability to accurately record and enter data
- Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
- Ability to understand and carry out job related instructions
- Ability to safely operate light duty equipment and tools used in work performed relating to civil construction and municipal maintenance operations.
- Ability to continuously use hand tools, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day; occasionally work in confined spaces, and frequently work in inclement weather
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING
- First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification; Traffic Control training; WHMIS Certification; Confined Spaces Training; and other job-related safety training
The current (2023) hourly wage rate for this temporary role is $32.00 based on a 40-hour work week (Schedule “B”). There are currently two positions available.
