Overnight Work Expected at 5th and Fitzgerald from July 8 – 10

June 29, 2018

Starting Tuesday July 3, construction of the 5th Street Complete Street Pilot Project will move east on 5th Street from Harmston to Fitzgerald Avenue to replace the last component of the 60-year-old water main.

During the month of July, there will be periods of one-lane traffic on 5th Street between Harmston and Fitzgerald. In order to install new water and stormwater mains through the 5th Street and Fitzgerald Avenue intersection, a full closure of the intersection will be required. In order to limit the traffic impacts to downtown businesses and the travelling public, work will occur in the evenings and overnight on the following dates:

Sunday, July 8:                   4 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Monday, July 9:                 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tuesday, July 10:              7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Construction lighting will be used to conduct the work safely. There will be some noise due to construction. Crews will work to minimize impacts to the surrounding area. Paving of the entire area will occur all at once in September. Scheduled water interruptions will occur outside of peak periods when connecting private properties to the new water main in July. Property owners will be notified of scheduled water interruptions with several days written notice.

The City appreciates the community’s patience and understanding through construction. Once this last phase of underground work is complete, reconstruction of the area will begin. Above ground improvements will include:

  • Two freshly paved vehicle lanes
  • Bike lanes physically separated from vehicle traffic
  • Improved accessibility for strollers, scooters, and wheelchairs
  • Parking between Fitzgerald and Harmston, and alternating parking and rain gardens throughout the remainder of the corridor
  • And, innovative stormwater management to improve drainage
