Construction on Riverside Lane for Sewer Line Twinning

August 1, 2019

Contractors working on behalf of the City of Courtenay will be adding a second sewer line along an existing line on Riverside Lane between Standard Park and 19th Street to increase capacity in the sewer system. The project will result in increased sanitary sewer capacity to support our growing community.

Work will take place on Riverside Lane between 14th Street (Standard Park) and 19th Streets, from early August until late 2019.

Expected Work Times:

Phase Location Work Time Working Hours
Phase 1 19th to 17th Streets Day 7 am - 7 pm
Phase 2 17th Street Crossing Night 7 pm - 6 am
Phase 3 1590 Cliffe Avenue Day 10 am - 7 pm
Phase 4 1530 Cliffe Avenue Night 5 pm - 8 am

The expected work times were developed following consultation with area businesses and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI).

Work on 17th Street near the bridge (Highway 19A) will be take place at night to reduce traffic disruptions. At least one lane of traffic flow will be maintained in both directions at all times.
Street parking will be restricted within the work zone when active construction is underway.

The Contractor will assist with regular curbside garbage and recycling pickup as required.
Traffic control personnel will be on site to direct vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists within the work area.

This project was made possible in cooperation with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI).

The construction contract was awarded through an open public competitive tendering process.  Wacor Holdings Ltd was the successful bidder.

All regulatory permitting has been obtained, to support the works (environmental, road works, MoTI, etc.). As this work falls within a known archaeologically sensitive area, appropriate permitting has been obtained, and the site will be actively monitored during construction.

A separate similar project nearby on 20th Street is expected to start at a later date, with a different contractor.

Schedules will be updated as work progresses. Please see our website at www.courtenay.ca/riversidesewer  for up-to-date project information.
