FireFit Regional Championships a Success

On May 11th and 12th, the Courtenay Fire Department hosted the Pacific Regional FireFit Championships. FireFit is a fast paced competition that is based on firefighting tasks performed in emergency situations.

This event brought competitors from Whitehorse, Fort MacMurray, Edmonton, Delta, Everett in Washington State and many BC communities. The Comox Valley was represented by firefighters from Hornby Island, Oyster River, Cumberland and Courtenay.

The Courtenay Fire Department had 23 competitors in multiple categories. Courtenay firefighters took medals in all race categories and results are as follows:

  1. Womens Relay: Gold Medal -  Firefighters Rebecca Palychuk, Jen Bood, Lynn Little, Savannah Seigler and Danyka Kozlowski
  2. Mens Team (top 3 individual times): Firefighters Ian Robertson, Russel Toneff, Kevin Berot, Kevin Appleyard and Captain Jonathan Welsh
  3. Mens Relay: Silver Medal - Firefighters Ian Robertson, Russel Toneff, Kevin Berot, Kevin Appleyard and Captain Jonathan Welsh
  4. Mens X3 (tandem): Silver Medal – Firefighter Ian Robertson and Captain Jonathan Welsh
  5. Mens X3: Bronze Medal -  Firefighters Kevin Appleyard and Ken Hryko
  6. Mens X3 over 50 (age category): Silver Medal - Firefighters Mark Simonson and Andy Quinn
  7. Mixed X3 (female and male compete together): Silver Medal – Firefighter Rebecca Palychuk and Captain Jonathan Welsh

The weather was amazing and the community showed a huge amount of support. It is estimated that over a thousand spectators came out throughout the weekend.
