FireFit Regional Championships Comes to Courtenay
February 22, 2019
Firefighting requires a wide-range of specialized skills and training, and a high level of physical fitness. This unique job has its very own competition featuring some of the best firefighter athletes from across British Columbia and Canada, and it’s coming to the Comox Valley.
The Courtenay Fire Department is hosting the BC Regionals FireFit Championships on Saturday May 11 and Sunday May 12. The championship, also known as “the toughest two minutes in sports”, will take place in the Superstore Parking Lot, 757 Ryan Road, and the public is encouraged to come and watch.
FireFit is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations. Competitors will range from seasoned veterans to first time rookies.
On Saturday May 11, individual racers will compete against one another. Sunday May 12 will feature tandem races and the three to five-person relay.
Don Bardonnex, Courtenay’s Fire Chief, said the FireFit event is positive for all involved. “We’re looking forward to hosting this event,” said Bardonnex. “There’s a constant flow of comraderie and teamwork throughout FireFit competitions that makes them engaging to watch and also great to be competing in.”
