Courtenay Recreation: Update to Mask Mandates for Public Facilities

October 13, 2021

Courtenay Recreation Participants: Please take note of a recent update to Public Health Orders (PHO) regarding mandatory wearing of masks for indoor spaces.

Effective Wednesday, October 13th the mask order now includes children 5 years and over (previously 9 years and over) and requires the wearing of a mask in public facilities including recreation centres. Masks may only be removed while engaged in physical activity in a program or in the Wellness Centre.

There are exemptions for:
• People with health conditions or with physical, cognitive or mental impairments who cannot wear one
• People who cannot remove a mask on their own
• Children under the age of 5
• People who need to remove their masks to communicate due to another person's hearing impairment

A face shield is not a substitute for a mask as it has an opening below the mouth.
