Collection and Recycling of Used Curbside Collection Containers

December 18, 2023

Between January 15 and February 2, 2024, City of Courtenay residents who do not want to or are not able to repurpose their used collection containers can donate them. This initiative was launched as a response to residents that expressed interest during the automated cart delivery period in 2023.

Option 1 - Curbside Pickup - January 15 to February 2, 2024

City residents will have THREE opportunities to set out their clean, used garbage, recycling and/or organics containers for pickup at curbside the day of their regularly scheduled collection by placing the old containers behind the automated carts. Please note, ONLY clean containers free of waste will be collected. If your container is missed on your collection day, please place it out the next week.

Option 2 – Old Container Exchange at City Public Works – McKenzie Ave – January 15 to February 10, 2024

City residents can drop off clean, used garbage, recycling and/or organics containers outside the McKenzie Ave gate to the City Public Works Yard.

Residents who want to repurpose the used containers for other uses (e.g. animal feed, storage), are welcome to pick them up at the same location on a first come first served basis. At the end of the event, all remaining containers will be shipped to Merlin Plastics for recycling.
