The City of Courtenay invites applications for a temporary, full-time"Equipment Operator” in the Utilities Maintenance Division of the Public Works Services Department. This is a temporary, full-time, union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
The successful candidate is responsible for the operation of light and heavy trucks and equipment, and participates in the day-to-day planning, organization and implementation of construction and maintenance jobs. They will do manual labour work while assisting in the construction, installation, inspection, maintenance, cleaning and repairing of public works infrastructure. The incumbent in this position works as a member of a crew, requiring a cooperative team effort.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 or equivalency
- Valid BC Class 3 Drivers License with Air Endorsement
- “A” Level Operator
- Considerable (5 years) experience in the safe operation of heavy and light equipment used in the construction and maintenance of municipal infrastructure such as loader, backhoe, excavator, grader, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of the methods, practices, and rules employed in the safe operations of heavy and light equipment
- Considerable knowledge of proper construction and maintenance practices related to public works infrastructure
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to read construction drawings
- Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications
- Ability to work well as a member of a team and work independently
- Ability to oversee the work of others
- Physical ability to continuously climb in and out of trucks and equipment and sit in and operate equipment throughout the work day, occasionally lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions and in confined spaces and frequently work in inclement weather
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING
- First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification, Traffic Control training, WHMIS Certification, Equipment Operator's training, and other job-related safety training
The current hourly wage rate is $37.09 based on a 40-hour work week.
