The Province of B.C.'s Home Owner Grant program reduces the amount of property tax you pay for your principal residence.The grant must be applied for every year.

How to Claim your Home Owner Grant


Complete the electronic Home Owner Grant application.

Other ways to claim your Home Owner Grant:

If eligible, please fill out and sign the grant application on the back of your tax notice. Alternatively, download a copy of the Home Owner Grant application from the Province of BC website. 

The Electronic Home Owner Grant option is available once property tax notices have are mailed in late May. 

The deadline to claim your home owner grant online is the first business day after July 1 every year.

You may also claim your home owner grant through the following methods:

  • through the mail
  • by fax to 250-334-4241
  • dropped in the after-hours mail slot located in the main front doors at City Hall.

Home owner grants claimed after that date are subject to a 10% penalty.  Date of postmark will not be accepted as the submission date.

Please note: Financial institutions and mortgage companies do not accept Home Owner Grant applications. Please submit Home Owner Grant applications directly to the City of Courtenay. Courtenay's online Electronic Home Owner Grant option is fast, easy and convenient.

Forgot to Claim Last Year’s Grant?

If you missed claiming your grant, you have one year to apply for it retroactively. You must complete and sign an Application for Retroactive Home Owner Grant available from the Province of B.C. website and remit it to the City of Courtenay.  For application instructions, including a list of original documentation that you must provide please contact Courtenay City Hall directly or visit the Province of BC website.
