Board of Variance

General Information

The  Board  of  Variance  deals  with  appeals  for  minor  variances where  compliance  with  the  Zoning  Regulation  Bylaw would  cause  undue  hardship.  The  Board  also  deals  with  matters  regarding additions  and  structural  alterations  to  non-conforming  buildings.  The  Board  cannot  deal  with  matters  related  to  land  uses,  density limits, or any developments adversely affecting the natural environment or substantially affecting the use and enjoyment of adjacent land.

How to make an application to the Board of Variance

Step 1

Identify the current zoning regulations you wish to apply to relax Ensure that your proposal meets the required guidelines and regulations.

**Prior to submitting any application, you are advised to discuss the proposal including specific application requirements for your project and required fees with Planning Division Staff.**

Step 2

Read the Board of Variance Application Guidelines to understand the application process and submission requirements. Ensure that your proposal meets the required guidelines and regulations.

 Step 3

When you feel that you are familiar with the requirements for making a Board of Variance application and have completed and compiled all of the required application submissions, contact Planning staff for a final review of submissions and staff will forward a link for you to upload your submissions to and provide you with the required application fees and methods available for payment.
