Work is set to begin this month on the Ryan Road Sidewalk Upgrade project, which will improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and connectivity along a heavily travelled section of Ryan Road between Back Road and Sandwick Road.
“This new sidewalk will offer an important connection for people walking and accessing transit in the area,” said Adam Pitcher City of Courtenay Manager of Capital Projects. “By filling in this gap in the pedestrian network, the City is improving safety and accessibility while making it easier for residents to move between neighbourhoods and access nearby destinations.”
The project will add approximately 350 metres of new sidewalk, filling an important gap in the City’s active transportation network. Echelon Creative has been awarded the work. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-September and take three months to complete.
The section of Ryan Road between Back Road and Sandwick Road is regularly used by people walking to access a BC Transit bus stop, travel between neighbourhoods, and reach homes in Braidwood or attend North Island College. The bus stop may be moved temporarily: notices will be posted by BC Transit directing transit users to its new location or to the nearest alterative stop.
To help reduce traffic congestion in the area, construction will take place primarily at night, between 7p.m. and 7a.m. One lane will be closed while work is underway and no significant traffic impacts are expected.
