Accessibility Survey Now Closed
Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences.
The City of Courtenay is developing its first Accessibility Plan under the Accessible British Columbia Act, and community input will play an important role in identifying barriers and guiding meaningful actions to improve accessibility across City programs, services, facilities, and public spaces.
The Accessibility Survey was open from December 8, 2025 to January 16, 2026.
A summary of what we heard and next steps will be shared later this year.
At the City we strive to:
- Welcome people of all abilities to our parks and public spaces, including recreation, and other community facilities.
- Create and periodically update community plans and regulations that positively impact neighbourhoods and the delivery of City services, including facilities, recreation programs, parks and infrastructure.
- Support the development and supply of adequate and affordable housing which either meets, or can readily be adapted to meet, the needs of people with disabilities.
- Design and build a street network and pedestrian infrastructure that is accessible to individuals of varying ages and abilities, with the needs of all users in mind.
- Provide access to local transit through sidewalk connections, passenger landing pads, and other bus stop facilities for people of all abilities.
- Improve city communication channels to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all residents.
Enhancing accessibility
As of September 1, 2023, municipalities are listed as prescribed organizations in the Accessible British Columbia Act, which mandates them to create an Accessibility Committee, formulate an Accessibility Plan, and facilitate public input.
In the Comox Valley, the local municipalities — the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland and the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) — collaborated to establish a formal relationship with the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee (CVAC). The CVAC will offer guidance and assistance in developing the Accessibility Framework, and supporting the implementation of individual Accessibility Action Plans for local governments as required.
Within this collective regional framework, each participating local government will have the opportunity to create individual action plans aimed at reducing or eliminating access barriers.
