All outdoor fires are currently banned in the City of Courtenay and the Courtenay Fire Protection District. This ban was enacted by B.C. Wildfire Service and took effect May 7, 2026, at noon.
This includes all outdoor burning on crown land, provincial parks and private property, such as:
- grass fires
- incinerator fires
- pit fires
- outdoor fireplaces and chimineas
- burning barrels
- forest and brush fires
- scrap wood fires
- running fires
- structure and building fires
- ground-thawing fires
- chattel fires
What is still allowed: Outdoor cooking or heating appliances that use natural gas, propane or briquettes, and CSA- or ULC-approved portable campfire devices with a flame height under 15 centimetres.
