Protecting people and pets in our city

Responsible pet ownership helps keep our neighbourhoods safe, respectful and enjoyable for everyone.


What you need to know

  • Dogs six months and older must be licensed. Licences are available at City Hall.
  • No more than three dogs over six months may be kept on a property.
  • Owners must ensure their dog is not at large, does not bite or attack a person or animal, and does not damage public or private property.
  • Dogs must be on a leash in all public spaces. There are no off-leash parks in Courtenay.
  • Dogs found running loose will be taken to Unleashed Dog Boutique in Comox (1970 Anderton Road).
  • Dogs are not permitted on school grounds, playgrounds, parks or sports fields.

  • Make sure your dog does not bite, attack or threaten people or other animals, or damage property.
  • Livestock is only permitted on agriculturally zoned properties.
  • Wild or exotic animals are not permitted.
  • Be a good neighbour — prevent excessive barking or howling
