To celebrate Fire Prevention Week, Domino’s Pizza and the Courtenay and Comox fire departments are once again partnering to reward residents who have working smoke alarms in their homes with free pizza.
On Friday, October 9, residents in Comox and Courtenay who live in single residential homes, duplexes or townhouses and call Domino’s Pizza between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., may receive their delivery with help from Comox or Courtenay firefighters.

Firefighters will arrive in a fire truck and, with the customer’s permission, inspect the household's smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly. Those with functioning smoke alarms will get their pizza for free. Households will be chosen at random and as resources are available.
If a smoke alarm requires new batteries, firefighters will replace them. For eligible residents without a working smoke alarm, firefighters may arrange a return visit to install a battery-powered smoke alarm at no cost.
This is the ninth year the Courtenay Fire Department has partnered with Domino’s Pizza to reward customers with the potential for a free pizza during Fire Prevention Week. Comox Fire Rescue joined the initiative in 2020.
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10. This year’s theme is “Safe Charging is a Superpower!” The campaign focuses on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. It emphasizes the importance of buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.
Key tips to remember:
- Buy only listed products: Look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA on any lithium-ion battery. This means it meets important safety standards.
- Don’t chance a cheap charger: Use the charger supplied by the manufacturer or an approved replacement.
- Soft surface? Hard pass: Charge your device on a hard surface and don’t overcharge it. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
- Charge responsibly: Charge items like e-bikes or power tools outside, when possible. Keep charging areas clear and never block exits.
