Requesting a mail ballot package
All eligible electors for the City of Courtenay may apply to vote by mail.
Apply at Courtenay City Hall, 830 Cliffe Ave., or by email to election@courtenay.ca by 4:30 p.m. October 15, 2026, or to the Chief Election Officer at a voting location until 6 p.m. October 17, 2026.
Application forms and complete mail ballot instructions are available at courtenay.ca/election.
To be counted, your completed mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8 p.m. October 17, 2026.
Elector registration
If you are not on the list of electors, you may register at the time of voting by completing an application and declaring that you meet the requirements below.
All electors registering at the time of voting must:
- be 18 years of age or older on general voting day, October 17, 2026
- be a Canadian citizen
- be a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day of registration
- not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law
Resident electors must also be a resident of the City of Courtenay on the day of registration.
Non-resident property electors must also:
- be a registered owner of real property in the City of Courtenay for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration
- not be entitled to register as a resident elector
- be an individual owner who is not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust
- if there is more than one registered owner, be the one individual registering as a non-resident property elector, with the written consent of the majority of the owners
Identification required to register at the time of voting
Resident electors must produce two pieces of identification, at least one with a signature. Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove residency and identity.
Non-resident property electors must produce two pieces of identification, at least one with a signature, to prove identity; proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property; and, if there is more than one owner, written consent from the majority of the property owners.
Types of documents accepted as identification
- driver’s licence
- identification card, such as:
- photo B.C. Services Card
- non-photo B.C. Services Card
- Owner’s Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence issued by ICBC
- B.C. CareCard or B.C. Gold CareCard
- Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security Request for Continued Assistance Form SDES8, now “Monthly Form EA181”
- Social Insurance Number card
- Citizenship Card
- real property tax notice
- credit card or debit card
- utility bill, such as electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable services
The identification documents listed above must be accepted by election officials. An election official may also accept other documents that provide satisfactory evidence, such as a valid, current passport.

Those electors who may require some assistance as a result of accessibility challenges are invited to contact the Chief Election Officer as soon as possible in order to facilitate their voting experience.
