Anderton Avenue demos complete, plans underway for riverfront

The demolition of three buildings on Anderton Avenue along the Courtenay River is now complete, marking a major milestone in the City’s efforts to improve the downtown riverfront.

Contractor Milner Group completed the work in early October. All buildings have been safely removed, hazardous materials managed, construction debris cleared, and gravel and fencing installed to secure the area until the next steps for the properties move forward.

“We’re glad to see this area become a clean slate, ready for more improvements that will lead to safer conditions and more opportunities to enjoy the riverfront,” said Mayor Bob Wells. “This is one of many improvements to our downtown core that will together improve the area for everyone.”

Demolition of the former Bridge Lounge, Cona Hostel and Anderton Arms buildings began in June 2025. The work required careful management of materials such as asbestos, and protective measures to safeguard the river.

With the buildings now gone, the City can plan for the safe removal of the failing retaining wall in front of the Cona Hostel and Anderton Arms properties, followed by shoreline restoration and planning for the long-term use of the land. The City will engage with the community in shaping this vision over the coming year.

Improvements along this section of riverfront are part of a broader suite of initiatives supporting the long-term vision for Courtenay’s downtown hub. Related projects include the 6th Street Active Transportation Bridge, planned upgrades to 6th Street as part of the Active Corridor project and the Downtown Vitalization Local Area Plan now underway.
