The City of Courtenay invites the community to celebrate the opening of a newly replaced playground and upgraded field irrigation and drainage system at Woodcote Park this spring. The playground opened on May 15, 2026, and residents are invited to a formal ribbon cutting ceremony on June 25, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.

The project replaced aging infrastructure that was more than 25 years old and no longer met current standards. The upgrades improve accessibility, water efficiency and overall play safety. The new playground was designed with community input and aligns with the City’s Let’s Play, Courtenay! Playground Design Standards, adopted in 2024, which prioritize accessibility and inclusion.

“Woodcote Park is an important gathering place for families and residents in west Courtenay,” said City of Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells. “This new playground reflects our commitment to creating inclusive, accessible spaces where everyone can play, connect and feel welcome. We’re proud to invest in amenities that support healthy, active communities.”

The upgraded park includes a full playground replacement, as well as new irrigation and drainage systems to improve field conditions year-round. New play features include inclusive, ground-level elements, sensory and nature-based play, a universal carousel, accessible swings and expanded rubber surfacing.

Additional enhancements will be added through summer 2026, including a misting station, water fountain and cultural interpretive signage developed with K’ómoks First Nation that will include artwork, language and interactive elements.

“Children in Courtenay will enjoy an inclusive and welcoming place to play, connect and stay active with the opening of this new playground,” said Christine Boyle, B.C. Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “These upgrades reflect our commitment to accessible, high-quality public spaces that respond to what residents want and need. We’re grateful for the strong partners and community support that helped make these improvements possible.”

The project is supported by approximately $560,000 from the Province of British Columbia’s Growing Communities Fund, with $1 million of the City’s overall $7.65 million allocation from the fund dedicated to playground improvements in the 2024–2028 Financial Plan. Additional contributions include $30,000 from Tire Stewardship BC for rubber surfacing, $7,300 from the Canadian Dermatology Association for a shade structure, $10,000 from the Courtenay Rotary Club for the universal carousel, and $10,000 from the Comox Valley Rotary Club for a misting station and water refill fountain. Contributions from Tire Stewardship BC and both Rotary clubs were matched by the City through its Partner in Parks program.

The City is grateful for this funding, along with the community contributions that support park amenities benefiting children and the broader community.

Woodcote Park is located at 1281 17th Street in west Courtenay and serves nearby residents, families and sport user groups. More information about the playground improvements is available at engagecomoxvalley.ca/woodcote.
