The City of Courtenay is moving forward with upgrades to Cousins Avenue between Willemar Avenue and 20th Street, with detailed design now underway. Residents are invited to learn more about the project and share feedback at a pop-up information session at Cousins Park on June 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“The Cousins Avenue upgrades are an important investment in maintaining and improving essential infrastructure for our community,” said Chris Davidson, Director of Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering at the City of Courtenay. “This project will enhance the roadway and replace aging underground services to support current needs and future growth.”
The project includes full road reconstruction, as well as upgrades to sidewalks, curbing, landscaping and trail connections. Many of the underground utilities in this area were installed decades ago and have reached the end of their service life, making this work both timely and necessary.
“Public input has played a key role in shaping this project,” said Bob Wells, Mayor of Courtenay. “We’re looking forward to reconnecting with the community to share the refined design and show how feedback has been incorporated.”
The City previously engaged residents and businesses on three design options and presented findings to Council in November 2024. Option 1 was selected, reflecting a balanced approach that improves pedestrian safety while maintaining parking and traffic function in this mixed-use corridor.
As the project moves into detailed design in 2026, the drop-in public information session will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more, ask questions and speak directly with the project team. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.
More information about the project, including past engagement materials and updates, is available on the Cousins Avenue Upgrades project page.
