Construction on the new Lake Trail Multi-Use Pathway is set to begin on September 15. Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are advised to take extra care and allow more time when travelling in the area.

Crews will be working in the roadway on this much-anticipated upgrade to active transportation infrastructure. Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place. Construction is expected to be complete in November.

“This is a really exciting step that will see a long-requested improvement become reality,” said Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells. “This path will make walking and cycling along Lake Trail Road much safer — and we need to keep everyone safe while we build it.”

The project includes a 620-metre gravel trail on the north side of Lake Trail Road, between Lake Trail Community School and Arden Road, as well as improved bike lanes on the north side of Lake Trail Road from Arden Road to Webb Road.

A proposed Phase 2, which would extend the multi-use path further west, will follow pending environmental permit approvals.

The project was originally requested by the student-led Arden Ambassadors and Arden Green Team members and community advocates who joined Council to raise awareness about traffic changes in the area.

The Lake Trail Multi-Use Pathway project is funded in part from Electoral Area C of the Comox Valley Regional District, which borders the area, and the Province of B.C.’s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
