Rainwater that doesn’t soak into the ground flows into storm drains, which then empties into local waterways. How we manage this rainwater affects the health of our rivers and oceans. This project focuses on managing rainwater in ways that protect the environment, reduce flooding and drought impacts, replenish soil moisture and limit runoff into waterways.
The Integrated Rainwater Management Plan guides how Courtenay manages rainwater both now and in the future. It includes managing underground infrastructure like stormwater pipes and catch basins, and protecting natural assets like wetlands and rivers.
The Integrated Rainwater Management Plan
This plan takes a broad look at the bylaws, policies, best management practices and infrastructure projects needed to improve drainage and reduce the impact of stormwater on local watersheds.
City Council adopted the plan in 2024 and staff are now working on implementing its recommendations.
